My pocket diapers have started leaking. I have stripped them and it doesn't seem to help. My baby used to wear a pocket diaper at night but I finally got tired of changing outfits and sheets in the middle of the night so we are using prefolds full time. Any ideas on what might be causing the leaking? It seems to happen right after she gets a new diaper on and she is laying on her back in bed. I know I should still be trying to use them to figure out the cause of the leaks, but I thought I would ask here instead.

We're Sick

It's our first sickness since the baby pumpkin was born. It started with the baby getting a runny nose, then getting congested and now I have a sore throat and a runny nose. I thought that breastfeeding was supposed to protect us from illnesses!

So I just wanted to give an update that we are alive although I don't feel so good so I have gotten behind in the blog world. Becca- thank you for the awards and I will show you the code I use to get the buttons to scroll. I wish I could remember where I saw it so I could give credit, but it is all one giant blur to me.

Oh- and things finally changed in the diaper department once the rice cereal had a chance to move through my baby's system. Let's just say that no one could have prepared me for what came out. My husband was home at the time and we both looked at each other and said "now what do we do with this?" Ha! I love the adventure of parenting.

I have the diaper sprayer but I haven't set it up yet. Baby pumpkin is eating about 1 tablespoon of rice cereal mixed with breast milk every night. The poops seem exactly the same. I don't have to actually start spraying unless there are solids coming out the other end, right?

We are getting ready to start solid foods with the baby pumpkin and I am little nervous about how this may affect our cloth diapering. I told my husband last night that if the poops are really that bad smelling that we can consider going back to disposables and he told me:

"No way, I love cloth diapers"

I love cloth diapers too, so I am glad to hear that he is still on board with this adventure. I am thinking of picking up a diaper sprayer this weekend to attach to our toilet. If anyone has any great tips for me, I would love to hear them.

I got 3 more diapers in the mail today that I ordered during black Friday shopping weekend. I am hoping that I now have enough so that baby pumpkin's dad can participate more actively in diaper changes. I don't mind using prefolds during the day but pocket diapers seem easier for my husband to figure out. Plus I like that they keep my baby feeling dry so she can sleep longer during the night (perhaps just in theory at this point). Speaking of sleep- that is what I should be doing right now, goodnight!

Focus on using cloth wipes

For us, we used cloth wipes from the beginning because that was our only option in the hospital. When we came home we tried one disposable wipe which made the baby pumpkin quite red. We decided then that we would stick with cloth wipes. We used washcloths in the beginning and we have a few flannel wipes now (we prefer those). I am excited to see that The Cloth Diaper Report is going to be doing a focus on cloth wipes later in December (the 14th-22nd). I am hoping that I can pick up some new ideas and maybe try some new wipes (so we can phase out the washcloths).

I am having a hard time letting go of the two full bags of disposable diapers that we still own. They are sitting on our couch in the living room to remind me to find them a new home. I actually have a neighbor with a baby one week younger than my baby so I suspect that she can use them. I just have this fear that once I let them go I will need them. (This is unfortunately a somewhat common problem for me)

So tonight I realized that I don't have any pocket diapers that are clean and ready to go. Pocket diapers are the "dad diapers" and we only have 3 of them. Well, today the baby was having a major case of the fussies all day (this happens after vaccines) and when my husband got home he let me lay down for a nap. When he asked if there were diapers ready for him I said "Oh, just use a disposable". And what he said shocked me. He said "I really need to learn how to do prefolds instead. Otherwise we are going to end up with a mess".

So my husband, who was kind of on the fence with cloth diapering... and definitely a spectator with prefolds, now wants to learn the ropes. I am pretty excited about that. I really should give away those diapers tomorrow, it would be like a Thanksgiving present.

One of the things I am still trying to figure out in cloth diapering is how to store my baby's dirty diapers until laundry time. I don't know what diaper to use!

These are the words I heard around 3am last night. Baby Pumpkin had had a rough day and my best defense for that was lots of feedings and diaper changes (she likes both of those things!). However, when nighttime rolled around we didn't have any pocket diapers in the diaper stack ready to go so my husband hit a stand still. We were also out of flannel wipes, so he picked up a prefold diaper and said "should I use this as a wipe?"

It's cute really. I am in the process of learning our system and I told him that once I figured out what worked for us (meaning me) I would teach him. No sense in both of us getting totally overwhelmed in this process!

Oh- and we had our single bum genius in the dryer so I grabbed that and we made it through the rest of the night with no leaks! Hooray!

The disposabes are back in the package- out of sight

So I had been storing a stack of disposables next to my stack of cloth diapers while I was making the transition. The stack of disposables was there in case I didn't have any clean cloth diapers (I don't have enough to last 2 days yet) or if dad decided to change a diaper. Well, we are going on 2 days of cloth diapers only so I decided it was time to take the stack of disposables away. I'll hang on to them until the baby bear grows out of that size and if I still have them, I will donate them or give them to a friend.

I'll be honest: I didn't expect the transition to cloth diapers to go that well. I thought we would have blowouts galore and horrible laundry drama. So far, we haven't had either- although I have become sort of obsessed with cloth diapering and I wasn't expecting that!
